FrostCarbon Launches to Commercialize FrostCC® Carbon Capture Technology
June 2, 2025
Carbon America was founded to build practical, commercial-scale carbon capture and storage projects. The company developed an integrated CCS platform across capture, transportation, storage, permitting, community engagement, and project development. By early 2024, Carbon America had contracted CO₂ volumes, advanced Class VI permitting, built a portfolio of regional storage hubs, secured DOE-backed development awards, and continued to mature its proprietary FrostCC® cryogenic carbon capture technology.
Through its work as a developer, Carbon America's conviction grew that FrostCC® represented the company's most differentiated long-term asset. Prior to the carve-out, Carbon America invested more than $30 million into the technology, including R&D, engineering, and pilot testing at the National Carbon Capture Center. That work validated the core platform and helped establish FrostCC® as a differentiated approach to carbon capture: modular, standardized, cryogenic, all-electric, and designed to avoid many of the complexity, water, steam, and chemical requirements associated with conventional capture systems.
In 2025, after a challenging period for the broader business, Carbon America refined its strategy. Rather than continuing to pursue a broad, capital-intensive development portfolio, the company has contracted its carbon storage efforts to focus primarily on DOE grant award projects with strong partners. This allows the company to preserve and advance high-quality storage opportunities, while creating a dedicated platform for the technology business.
FrostCarbon has been carved out in the second quarter of 2025 to focus exclusively on commercializing FrostCC®. The carve-out preserves the core technical team and operating capability behind the platform, while giving FrostCarbon a clean capital structure and a sharper commercial mandate.
The experience has shaped how FrostCarbon operates. Building in CCS teaches you a few things quickly: time to cash flow will almost always take longer than you plan, counterparty alignment is not optional, and capital discipline is a survival requirement, not a best practice. FrostCarbon was built around those lessons: stay lean, focus on repeatable technology deployment, and commercialize a platform that can scale beyond one-off projects.
Carbon America remains active in CCS development through selected storage opportunities. FrostCarbon carries forward the technology platform, the team, and the hard-earned experience from that work, with a singular focus on bringing FrostCC® to market.
